JOLIET (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A bank robbery suspect is dead, following a shootout Wednesday with Joliet police.

The fatal exchange of gunfire occurred outside a home on the 200 block of Desplaines Street, just two blocks from the Joliet police station.

Police said the officer dispatched to the home was following up on a bank robbery, which the FBI said happened about 9:30 a.m. at the First Midwest branch at 1415 W. Jefferson Street.

Police said the gunman opened fire as the officer approached the house. The officer ducked behind a car and returned fire, fatally wounding the man. The gunman was pronounced dead at St. Joseph Hospital. The officer was taken to Silver Cross Hospital for treatment and observation.

The Will/Grundy Major Crimes Task Force will investigate.
