(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan on Wednesday will ask lawmakers to approve new rules requiring  members, staff and the public to wear masks, among other precautions, when the General Assembly meets for the first time since the coronavirus shutdown.

But will everyone agree?

Madigan, D-Chicago, proposes a mask rule for when House members convene at the Bank of Springfield Center. He’s also asking people to submit to temperature checks and practice social distancing.

The top House Democrat  says any member in violation could face discipline—including being removed from the chamber by a House vote.

Central Illinois Republican Rep. Brad Halbrook is among lawmakers who question the guidance. Still, he says, he has talked with his doctor and would decide in the morning to do what best protects himself and his colleagues.

He and Rep. Darren Bailey previously were refusing to commit to wearing face masks.

Bailey, a southern Illinois Republican, is the lawmaker who sued Gov. JB Pritzker over the Democrat’s stay-at-home order.
