A North Side Alderman wants to require that people wear masks when they can’t maintain social distancing in public settings, but Mayor Lightgfoot has some reservations about that.
Lincoln Park Alderman Michele Smith has introduced an ordinance that would require anyone over 2 years old to wear a face mask in places like grocery stores and other places where a 6-foot separation is difficult.
Lightfoot on Wednesday said she supports encouraging people to cover their faces in certain circumstances, but adds it’s not that simple.
The challenge is making sure all people can get masks. What’s possible in Lincoln Park may not be possible in Austin or Englewood, she said.
“We’re not going to lock people up because they’re not wearing masks,” Lightfoot said.
