CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mayor Lightfoot says she’s thinking about what kind of memorial the city eventually will have for the first-responders and others lost during the coronavirus pandemic.
Lightfoot on Friday said sometime after COVID-19 restrictions are lifted the city hopefully will be able to properly pay tribute to fallen public servants. She spoke after officials announced a third Chicago police officer had died from complications of the virus.
Funerals that normally would have been high-profile have been scaled back because of health concerns.
“I’ve actually been thinking a lot about that. What would be the appropriate way for us to recognize the sacrifice of so many who have died and, unfortunately, will die as a result of this illness?” the mayor said.
“It’s a really tough time because of the social-distancing requirements. Families are not able to gather in the way that they would.”
