CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Mayor Lightfoot on Wednesday snuffed out an attempt by some aldermen to delay the recreational sales of marijuana in Chicago.
An ordinance to delay recreational sales until July 1 was narrowly defeated. It was sponsored by black aldermen who complain people of color are being left out of the dispensary trade. The state law authorizing recreational pot gave deference to existing medical marijuana distributors, all of whom are white.
Lightfoot's city budget relies on marijuana revenue being collected Jan. 1. She agrees that getting minorities involved in the new marijuana industry is a priority.
