CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot had a little back and forth Thursday with the White House Press Secretary, after she reportedly referred to Lightfoot as a "derelict mayor."

The topic in a roundabout way was about crime. The White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany had Chicago's mayor in her sights.

"These kids who have died across this country - it is unacceptable and under this President, he will take action and the derelict mayor of Chicago should step up and ask for federal help, because she is doing a very poor job at securing her streets," McEnany said.

This comes after President Trump's frequent criticisms about violence in the Windy City. Lightfoot has repeatedly urged Congress to approve federal relief funds to cities to help them emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chicago's Mayor Lori Lightfoot fired back on Twitter, writing "Hey, Karen, watch your mouth."

"Karen" being a name that has come to mean an entitled white women who cause disturbances, sometimes racially charged ones.

The Mayor's tweet piggybacked onto Time reporter Brian Bennett's report of the remark, also referred to McEnany as "Karen," which is not her first name.

It's the latest round of salvos between the Trump and Lightfoot administrations. During recent social unrest, the Chicago mayor effectively told the president "F-U" after he tweeted the saying, "When the looting starts the shooting starts," a law enforcement slogan from the civil-rights era with racist connotations. Last October, before a national gathering of chiefs of police, Trump said Afghanistan was safer than Chicago.
