LOCKPORT (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A 181-year-old building that played a role in Illinois history has been damaged by vandals, and now police are asking for help in finding those responsible.
It's the Gaylord Building in Lockport, the oldest industrial building still standing along the Illinois & Michigan Canal.
Lockport Deputy Police Chief Ron Huff said about a month ago, vandals painted graffiti on the building and damaged the rooftop air conditioning.
"The words 'Skeleton Crew' were sprayed fairly predominately on the building. But other than that, it was just random lettering. It doesn't appear to be anything, even gang-related."
Huff said there are security cameras in the area, but they were not useful in identifying the people who vandalized this building.
The site is on the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
