Loyola Senior Uses Coronavirus As Inspiration For Final Project

Loyola U. Student Uses Coronavirus As Inspiration For Final Project
Annie Tomsche

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Coronavirus brought the abrupt end to on-campus learning at Loyola University but one senior made her final project all about the virus.

Annie Tomsche had been busy working on a book for her semester-long capstone project but in April decided to scrap it and start over.

The Visual Communications major made a four-minute video that's both a love letter to the school and a snapshot in this very unusual time.

She enlisted about 50 classmates and Loyola's most famous basketball fan - Sister Jean – to read her script about how the virus changed things and made them wonder what they would have done differently if they had known it was coming.

The end result has been watched thousands of times online and earned Tomsche an A in the class.

At the request of Sister Jean, Tomsche gave a copy to the school's archives.

Tomsche's graduation ceremony was originally scheduled for last Friday but has been postponed until August.

For my senior capstone project, I wanted to talk about growth. I had a fully realized idea of writing and illustrating a book, and then the COVID-19 pandemic occurred, and my project seemed to completely lack substance. Everything I was writing seemed to lead to writing about the situation our world has found itself in, and how it has affected myself and my classmates. "To the Class of 2020" is a video written and produced by myself and performed by Loyola University Chicago seniors. It is my attempt at processing and grieving this situation. I know it's hard, and I know it's heavy, but I hope it gives you hope. As seniors graduating from college remotely, it's difficult to see our next steps, but I know we will grow from this. It's our turn to go forth and set the world on fire. Thank you for taking the time to watch/read! Please feel free to share this post with someone in the class of 2020!!
