CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It all began two years ago when a North Shore teenager wanted something to snack on.
"I'm a Type-1 diabetic, and I like making egg whites because it's an easy option I don't have to think about,” Zack Schreier said. “And I make eggs every day and I would scrape those little pieces off and enjoy them like little crispy pieces. And realized that could be like a new healthy snack."
Schreier, then 18, called up his friend, Nick Hamburger.
"I said, 'Nick, I've got an idea. We should make chips made from egg whites.'"
With that, Quevos was born.
Schreier said they've cooked a lot of eggs in the past couple of years – thousands – to perfect Quevos. He and his business partner both finished their sophomore years in college and dropped out to run Quevos.
Schreier’s parents have been supportive.
"Certainly they knew we were stepping into a crowded space. And with a product like ours tasted originally, they wondered if we could ever make it. But they had confidence in us."
"We definitely wanted to sample a large variety of flavors to see what would work best, and so we had … I believe it was a garlic-lime flavor. That was the one that really tasted like green Gatorade powder."
Schreier is grateful for all of the help he has received.
“People are really eager to help because we are young, and they're excited, too. Certainly it's been quite a ride so far."
