CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Popular music festival Mamby on the Beach has been canceled after significantly higher than average waters from Lake Michigan and the presence of an endangered bird species on Montrose beach.
In a statement, the music festival said that despite working tirelessly with the Chicago Park District and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services to find a new location, moving the festival at such a late date would be a "disservice to fans artists alike."
For weeks, environmental groups and bird lovers have been at meetings with the Park District and the production company to ask them to cancel or move the festival. Jam Productions and React Presents, who put on the festival, have been adamant that the show would go on, even though bird advocates had threatened to sue if the festival were to continue.
Social media was ablaze Friday afternoon after the news, some applauding the festival for "making the right decision" and excited to see what happens next for the festival. Some people are disappinted they will not get to see their beloved musical acts but most people shared their respect for Mamby and its transperancy on the issue.
