(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — You may have been on the L or in a coffee shop or in line at the grocery store and had the urge to ask that unmasked person, “Would you please put your mask on?”
Should you?
The short answer is: Yes. If you first read the situation and the person and think it seems like the right thing to do, by all means, say it.
That’s how Jessica Lieffring said she’d approach it. She’s the founder of The Polite Society, a Chicago-based company that does etiquette training.
“It’s absolutely OK to kindly and politely ask them, ‘Would you mind putting your mask up?’” she told WBBM Newsradio’s Steve Miller on Friday.
“And most people would absolutely do that. But not everybody is as nice as others. So, you might have to deal with potential confrontation.
“And should that be the case, it’s best to just walk away. Or just let it go. Hold your breath, sanitize, get as far away as possible.”
Lieffring says it’s also possible for some of the righteously indignant face coverers to go too far, and that extreme is to be avoided, too.
