CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayoral candidate Susana Mendoza has found herself playing defense in connection with 1st Ward Ald. Proco “Joe” Moreno, who became the subject of a police investigation. While Susana Mendoza was near a CTA stop Wednesday promoting her public transit improvement plan, reporters were asking her about tens of thousands of dollars her campaign has donated to Moreno over the years.
Mendoza said she has long supported up-and-coming people running for office. Moreno’s now under investigation for allegedly reporting a car as stolen when it was really being driven by someone he previously dated.
Mendoza apparently is listed as the headliner at a Moreno fundraiser this month.
She said she had no idea she was listed as a "honored guest” and plans to be in Springfield that day for the governor's budget address.
The headache for Mendoza comes a day after rival mayoral hopeful Toni Preckwinkle slammed her for getting married at the home of now federally charged Ald. Ed Burke.
Mendoza fired back that while she may have had a small civil ceremony in Burke's home, Preckwinkle has had a fundraiser there
Burke's efforts on Preckwinkle's behalf have also come under scrutiny. Preckwinkle said she's returned campaign contributions from Burke.
