MILWAUKEE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Milwaukee Public School Board voted unanimously Thursday night to cancel its contract with the police department.

The Milwaukee Public School Board heard from parents, students, and teachers for about an hour before the vote.

"Foster a safe environment for all your students, which simply cannot be done with a gun, a ticket, or metal detector," said one speaker.

"We are putting our youth in harms way by connecting them to the school to prison pipeline by having officers in our schools," said another.

The passed resolution immediately terminates all contracts with the Milwaukee Police Department and directs the superintendent to stop any contracts to buy or keep metal detectors, facial recognition software, and social media monitoring software.

CBS 58 in Milwaukee reports metal detectors are going away, as well as police officers, and that has some concern.

"We do not have a society that is balanced. We have a lot of gun violence and access to weaponry, and this is what's happening right now," said one speaker.

The police department issued a statement saying it fully supports the school system's decision.

"The Milwaukee Police Department fully supports the Milwaukee Public School system if it decides to remove all School Resource Officers from its schools. We agree with the many voices from our community who believe that the funding should be reinvested into our public school system to support social services. Regardless of the vote, MPD will continue to support MPS and MPS students," the statement read.
