(670 The Score) -- The White Sox have locked down yet another young cornerstone piece on a long-term deal.
Third baseman Yoan Moncada and the White Sox have agreed to a five-year contract extension that also includes a team option on the back end, Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic first reported Thursday afternoon. The deal will guarantee Moncada at least $70 million, Jeff Passan of ESPN reported. Moncada will receive $65 million over the first five years, and the team option is $25 million with a $5-million buyout for the 2025 season, Passan reported. So the total value could reach $90 million over six years.
Moncada had been on track to become a free agent after the 2023 season, meaning the White Sox bought out two of his free agency years.
Moncada had a breakout 2019 season, hitting .315 with 25 homers, 79 RBIs and a .915 OPS in 132 games.
Moncada's extension is the latest in a long line of them for the White Sox, who have become industry leaders in locking down their youngsters early. Left fielder Eloy Jimenez, center fielder Luis Robert and reliever Aaron Bummer are three other young White Sox players to sign long-term extensions in the past 12 or so months. Shortstop Tim Anderson also did so back in March 2017.
