(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A veteran who will be buried later this week at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood died without friends or family, and the funeral home handling his arrangements hopes some people will show up to pay final respects.

WBBM’s Jim Gudas reports.

Dignity Funeral Services is asking people to go to the national cemetery Friday afternoon to pay tribute to George Babcock, Jr., who served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1965.

According to his online obituary, Babcock was 79. He’ll be buried at 2:30 p.m.

Christine Gutzeit, program specialist at Lincoln National Cemetery, said every year they have several services for veterans who passed away alone.

Former service members deserve proper respect when they are laid to rest, she said, whether it’s from a cemetery honor guard or efforts like the one on behalf of George Babcock.
