CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It's a start. On Wednesday, Chicago's Navy Pier partly reopened, and a smattering of visitors showed up.

Most were wearing masks, reports WBBM Newsradio's Steve Miller, who talked with some visitors.

Only restaurants with outdoor seating were open, while bars that serve alcohol only remained closed. Parking was free on Wednesday.

Navy Pier is considered Chicago's biggest tourist attraction and normally sees millions of visitors each year, especially during warm months. The city's lakefront trails, parks and beaches remained closed, but Mayor Lori Lightfoot has signaled that some restrictions could soon be eased.

Illinois had been under a stay-at-home order for much of the spring but moved into Phase 3 of a statewide reopening plan at the end of May. More types of businesses are open and more activities are allowed, but there are still many restrictions in place to help stem the spread of the novel coronavirus.
