CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago man will finish something next week that he set out to do 70 years ago: get his college degree.

Ninety-year-old Bob Dwyer said plenty of students were wondering "what's that old man doing in this class" when he first showed up at Northeastern Illinois University two years ago.

Dwyer was able to transfer some of his credits from his years at Wright College in the late 1940s and has finished up his coursework in interdisciplinary studies.

When he graduates with a bachelor's degree next Monday, he says it'll feel like a mission accomplished.

Dwyer dismissed his children's suggestion that he go for a master's degree next.

“I said they’re out of their mind.”

Instead, he plans to resume playing bridge and volunteer as a teacher's aide.
