CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago’s new police superintendent sounded a familiar refrain Monday as he sought to explain a violent Father’s Day weekend in Chicago.
David Brown says it’s guns, gangs and drugs, and he’s faulting the criminal justice system for letting felons out when they should be held.
“There are too many violent offenders not in jail - or on electronic monitoring, which no one is really monitoring,” Brown said Monday in a live-streamed appearance to discuss weekend violence.
Brown was asked about the goal he talked about more than a month ago: to hold the number of murders in a year to 300. The number hasn’t been that low in Chicago since the late-1950s.
“I believe in Chicago, and I believe we can achieve above and beyond where we currently stand,” he said.
Dozens were shot this past weekend. Those killed included teenagers and a 3-year-old.
Brown was confirmed as the new Chicago police superintendent earlier this year. The veteran police official previously led the Dallas Police Department.
