AURORA (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Police in Aurora say they arrested a man early Wednesday after he fired celebratory New Year's gunshots, one of which hit a sleeping neighbor.

It was just after midnight, and Aurora Police Spokesman Paris Lewbel says officers responded to a call about a man who'd been asleep and was shot in the abdomen.

When police arrived, he showed them a bullet hole in his wall.

"They began speaking with some residents and learned that there was a New Year's Eve party,” Lewbel said. “Multiple people reported hearing what sounded like loud pops."

Officers found a handgun in one of the cars outside the New Year's party – and more than 30 shell casings.

Authorities charged 48-year-old Miguel Reyes with two felonies. Police say he admitted to firing multiple rounds at midnight. Police say the home where the man was hit by a bullet is a couple hundred feet from where Reyes was firing the handgun.

Lewbel says the man who was shot is expected to survive.
