CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It is now officially farmers market season in Chicago -- and today was opening day for the market at Daley Plaza.
"We got rained on early, but here we are. It's beautiful right now."
That's Chad Nichols of Nichols Farm and Orchard in Marengo, which has been part of the Daley Plaza market since it started in 1984.
WBBM couldn't help asking Nichols' customer who was buying tomato plants if it wasn't a little risky putting tomatoes out now, with 40s still in the forecast.
"No."
WBBM: How come?
Nichols chimed in.
"'Cause you're going to get tomatoes early, right? That's the way to do it."
"Mid-May is my understanding," the customer said.
"Yeah, it's going to be great," Nichols assured him. "All right. Twenty even."
WBBM: I'm guessing you're an optimist by nature.
"I try to be," the customer said. "It's a struggle."
