CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Five years have passed since former Lane Tech football player Drew Williams collapsed from severe head trauma during a game and fell into a coma. Coaches, former teammates and even coaches from rival schools are participating in a fund-raiser Saturday for Williams and his family.
It's called "Saint Practice Day" by organizers and staff at City's Edge, at 5310 W. Devon Ave. Williams was a senior running back when he collapsed. The next eight months were touch-and-go, with emergency surgery, pneumonia, high fevers and low blood pressure. Even today he's still "fighting the fight," and is being taught at home by Lane Tech instructors.
Coaches from Lane, Notre Dame College Prep and Loyola Academy are serving as celebrity bartenders.
Festivities continue till 10 p.m.
If you can't attend, a 501(C)(3) and GoFundMe page remain active. Together they have raised more than $72,300.
