CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A cleaning site for used medical masks is now up and running in Illinois.
Columbus, Ohio based non-profit Batelle has started cleaning masks at a sterilization facility in Waukegan.
The biochemical research company is sterilizing used N95 masks with hydrogen peroxide gas.
CEO Lews Von Thaer said the facility will serve hospitals and first responders for free.
Company officials said the site can clean as many as 80,000 masks per day.
Battelle said the Waukegan site has been sterilizing masks for Advocate Aurora Health's hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin.
