(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An off-duty Cook County Sheriff's sergeant was killed Sunday afternoon in a car crash in Elgin.
The Cook County Sheriff's office says the off-duty sergeant suffered "a fatal medical emergency."
Elgin Police say the sergeant drove southbound across northbound lanes and hit a utility pole in the 1100 block of Dundee in Elgin.
Authorities say the passenger was not hurt.
But the driver -- the off-duty-sheriff's sergeant -- was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The Cook County Sheriff's office says: "We are shaken by this loss and our hearts go out to his family."
The Kane County Coroner says the autopsy will be Wednesday.
