(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Seventy years since Marge's Flowers opened in Skokie, today is the store's last day. It's a casualty of a downturn in business because of coronavirus.

The owner of Marge's Flowers, Gloria Kalmes, said the last four or five years have been rough. But it was COVID-19 that forced her and her husband to close the shop.

"We lost Passover, Easter, Secretary's Week, Mother's Day, Niles West's and Niles North's proms," she told WBBM Newsradio.

She says on this last day, more than 100 cars drove by in tribute to the flower shop.

Gloria Kalmes is the daughter-in-law of the original owner, Marge, who opened the store in 1950.

"I know my mother- and father-in-law, Marge and Jake, are looking down on us and saying we did a good job carrying over the business."
