CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Despite a warning today from the National Weather Service about potentially dangerous rip currents on Lake Michigan on the Illinois shoreline, some parents let their kids swim in the lake.

One of them was Alfonso De Las Cuevas of Hyde Park, who wasn’t worried at all as his seven-year-old daughter splashed in the waters off Rainbow Beach on the South Side.

She is a good swimmer and is staying below the waist," De Kas Cuevas said of his daughter.

He did notice the red flags along the beach warning people not to go into the water, but he said as long as his daughter was close and stayed in the shallows, he believed she was perfectly safe.

High waves at Lake Michigan had some people on edge but lifeguards were on duty at Rainbow Beach, ready to help if anyone did get into trouble in the water.
