CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- As sizzling temperatures set in across the Chicago area, drivers are being warned to keep cool in cases of pavement buckling.

"It's really impossible to predict when and where it might occur," said Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman Guy Tridgell.

Motorists should stay prepared as temperatures skyrocket.

"That means having our staff ready to respond as quickly as possible," he said. "It's also having the materials ready to make the repairs so we can get lanes open as quickly as possible."

Tridgell said drivers should avoid driving over buckled pavement, report incidents to law enforcement and stay on the lookout for temporary work zones.

"There can be some traffic stoppages. We just ask people to be patient, slow down, especially where there's workers and equipment, and just be patient," he said.
