HUMBOLDT PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A person was shot in a "gun battle" with police officers Friday evening in Humboldt Park on the West Side, according to a police spokesman.

Officers responded shortly after 8 p.m. to the area of Division and Lawndale for a possible robbery in progress, Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. At the scene, the officers were possibly fired upon, Guglielmi said.

The officers fired back and engaged in a "gun battle," but it was unclear if the shot person was struck by officers or was shot beforehand, Guglielmi said.

The male was shot once in the chest and was transported in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, Chicago Fire Dept. spokesman Larry Langford said. An officer from the scene was taken to the same hospital for chest pain, Langford said. The officer's condition was stabilized.

The shooting is the third this week in which gunshots were fired at police, Guglielmi said. Thursday night, officers were fired upon while responding to shots fired in Belmont Cragin, police said. No one was injured in that attack.
