CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Orland Park Police are providing more information about the death of a toddler on Tuesday during a shopping trip to Orland Square Mall.Police Chief Tim McCarthy said five children were shopping with their grandmother and aunt and playing in the Akira clothing store when 2-year old Alexa Martinez of Harvey suffered head injuries from which she’d later die."From the video that we have obtained at this point and one witness statement, it appears two temporary steel walls approx 8-feet high and 3-feet wide somehow fell over upon the victim," Chief McCarthy said.He said the temporary walls weighed 75-100 pound each. He said they were situated parallel to each other. Investigations Cmdr. Eric Rossi tells WBBM Newsradio the walls fell "like dominoes" onto the girl.
"Video shows children playing in the area, but until we get better video, enhance the video, we can’t conclude at this time whether one of the children may have pushed over the wall dividers so the matter remains under investigation," Chief McCarthy said.Asked what advice he'd give to parents and grandparents when shopping with children, Chief McCarthy said in an emotion-choked voice that they should watch their children. He said that at 1:52 p.m. Tuesday, Orland Park Police started getting 911 calls "of a child injured while climbing up shelves at the Akira store."Chief McCarthy said Officer Sean Murphy was the first officer on the scene and that a doctor and a nurse "were administering CPR to the victim." They were able to help restore Alexa's pulse and breathing.Orland Park Fire Protection District paramedics soon took over and transported the girl to Christ Hospital where she later died.Chief McCarthy said there was a slight language barrier, as the family spoke Spanish, but he said it did not hamper efforts to save the girl.
