(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Controversial plans to open an addiction treatment center in Itasca were discussed Wednesday night at the latest in a series of public hearings.

WBBM's Jim Gudas reports.

The non-profit group Haymarket wants to convert a hotel at I-290 and Irving Park Road into a 240-bed addiction treatment facility.

Dr. Dan Lustig is President and CEO of Haymarket. He said Itasca was picked in part because of access to public transportation.

Attorney Steve Ellenbecker, representing some Itasca residents, questioned whether people from other suburban areas could get to Itasca easily using public transit.

Others questioned whether the facility would put a strain on local services such as schools, police and fire. Lustig has said Haymarket is taking several steps to rely as little on such services as possible.

The Itasca Plan Commission is holding several public hearings on the Haymarket project. If the Plan Commission approves, it would still need approval from the Itasca Village Board.
