CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The Anti-Cruelty Society says one of its puppies was stolen Wednesday from a pet adoption center in the South Loop.
It was about 3:20 in the afternoon at a PetSmart in the 1100 block of South Canal, where the Anti-Cruelty Society has a satellite adoption center.
Anti-Cruelty Spokeswoman Colette Bradley says three boys walked in and were told they were too young to be in the store without an adult.
"There was a confrontation and at some point, the puppy was placed in a backpack and the teenagers walked out of the store with the puppy in the backpack," she said. "We have been looking endlessly, tirelessly, for this puppy since."
Bradley says it's a two-month-old female -- an Australian shepherd/hound mix -- named Smarties. And Smarties is microchipped.
Police say two of the boys are teenagers and the third may be as young as 11.
