The Illinois Lottery promotes giving lottery tickets as holiday gifts, except to one group.

Lottery spokesman Jason Schaumburg says it's not only illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to play the lottery. It's also against the law to give lottery tickets to anyone under 18.

"Gift responsibly," Schaumburg said.

Schaumburg says there's a reason why the Lottery discourages giving lottery tickets to anyone under the age of 18.

He says studies have shown that people who gamble at a young age are more likely to become gambling addicts as adults.
