CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Some Chicago aldermen and restaurant owners are demanding a crackdown on delivery apps.

Mayor Lightfoot has already introduced a plan to require the apps to disclose the fees they charge restaurants to deliver their menu items. Now, more Chicago aldermen and restauranteaurs are getting on board, calling for crackdowns on third-party delivery fees.

Delivery apps like Grubhub and DoorDash take additional fees from restaurants in exchange for delivering food. They have been criticized recently because of the various costs they charge restaurants in order to make deliveries.

Grubhub spokeswoman Amy Healy said the company has “strong concerns with the concept of a government-imposed cap on fees paid by restaurants for delivery and marketing services.

“Any cap on fees, regardless of the duration, will result in damaging, unintended consequences, as we’ve already seen for locally-owned businesses, delivery workers, diners and the local economy,” Healy said. “In fact, it would result in the exact opposite of what the legislation is designed to accomplish.”

Alderman Scott Waguespack, 32nd Ward, has his own proposal to cap fees charged by the apps.
