CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Lori Lightfoot's first full Chicago City Council meeting Wednesday generated sparks with a couple of defiant aldermen and ended with her scoring a clear win.
Before the council overwhelmingly approved new rules and procedures for itself, former Finance Committee Chairman Edward Burke objected, saying the language was not gender-neutral. He noted the language referred to the masculine form "he."
"Anything further, alderman?" Lightfoot asked.
Lightfoot pointed out to lawyer Burke that the law considers men and women equal, no matter which word is used.
Later, reporters asked the mayor what she thought Burke was trying to do.
"Showmanship. Apparently Ald. Burke has forgotten that I'm a 30-year trial lawyer," Lightfoot replied.
The council also approved a new lineup of committees and chairs to lead them, despite an objection from 15th Ward Ald. Ray Lopez.
Lightfoot said she won't put up with people who test her, just for the sport of it.
