CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Illinois State Police Department said 6,300 tickets have been handed out so far this year for Scott's Law violations with fines going up in the new year.

Starting Jan. 1, motorists who break Scott's Law for the first time will face a $250 fine, which is up from the current $100.  Motorists who violate the law more than once will be fined $750.

Under Scott's Law, motorists must move over a lane, if they can safely, or slow down when passing any vehicle, on the side of the road, that has flashing lights.

State Trooper Mindy Carroll said it's been a tough year for her department because of Scott's Law violators.

"We lost Christopher Lambert in January, because someone violated this law. We lost Trooper Brooke Jones-Story, because someone violated this law."

In all, the ISP says, 27 stationary state trooper vehicles have been hit by motorists, which is higher than the previous three years combined.

Trooper Carroll said she has seen many motorists doing the right thing and following Scott's Law, but she said the word needs to get out to many more motorists who don't know about it or ignore it.
