CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Seniors who are more at-risk for coronavirus can get matched up with young helpers in DuPage County.
DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin offers a few ideas how healthy young people can help can help their older neighbors amid the coronavirus outbreak.
"Maybe stay at home and spend a little time with grandma, reading a book," he said.
He said he has seen plenty of heart-warming posts on social media of healthy, young people volunteering to help out the elderly or people with compromised immune systems by picking up groceries or medications.
"Want to help deliver groceries or pick up prescription drugs, offer a little bit of comfort and companionship for periods of times
Anyone interested should go to, givingdupage.org, the county's volunteer search portal that's been around for 14 years and has hundreds of ways to give back.
"With every crisis, there's an opportunity for communities to come together and to really demonstrate our commitment" to each other, Cronin said at a press conference at the county health department on Sunday.
The Republican has this to say to those who criticize public officials as overreacting when they urge people to stay home: "if these changes in your lifestyle lead to helping one person, safe one person from contracting this virus, or saves one life then isn't it worth it?"
