CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- After a computer glitch led to thousands of property tax bills for Cook County seniors to mistakenly inflate, the County Assessor is promising to help affected home owners quickly.
About 3,200 seniors, most of them in Wheeling Township, wrongly lost the “freeze” portion that should have been on their bills, assessor’s spokesman Scott Smith said.
A “corrupted file” caused a glitch in the mainframe computer, he said, and that led to the miscalculation of the assessment freeze.
The error was only detectable after the county processed property tax bills, he said.
In some cases, the miscalculations were hundreds or thousands of dollars, Smith said.
Corrected property tax bills should be in the mail this week. For those who paid the higher amount already, Smith said, they should receive rebate checks from the county in six to eight weeks.
