(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The fire department in Lincolnshire says 14 people were taken to hospitals Thursday afternoon after a chlorine leak at a condo building swimming pool, with gas readings so high they blew out two meters.

It's an outdoor pool, but the building nearby is where the chlorine leak occurred, at the Village Green Condos in Lincolnshire.

Tom Krueger, chief of the Lincolnshire Riverwoods Fire Protection District, said firefighters found two teenagers in that building, both unconscious.

"They initially were the most critical, due to the fact that they were overcome by either chlorine gas or a mixture of chlorine gas and carbon monoxide."

Chief Krueger says two other people who were standing nearby were also taken to hospitals, along with four firefighters and six police officers.

He says chlorine gas levels were extremely high.

"The readings were so high that it burned out two of our meters."

Krueger said the most likely cause is maintenance on the mechanical system of the pool.

All 14 are expected to be all right, he said.
