Statue-Purge Movement Comes To Southern Illinois

Some residents of a Southern Illinois community want a statute of the state's third governor removed from a public plaza because of his history of owning slaves.

Nearly 500 people have joined a Facebook group in favor of tearing down a statue of Ninian Edwards (1775-1833), the man the town is named after.

The Intelligencer reports supporters are okay with keeping the town's name and keeping Edwards' name on the plaza. One longtime resident said the effort to remove the statue could help advance the civil rights movement that has gained traction nationwide.
