CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO)--A man was critically hurt early Sunday after he went to a rooftop to smoke and fell while peering off the ledge of a five-story building in River North.

Two men were drinking at 12:30 a.m. Sunday in the 700 block of North Dearborn when they went to a rooftop to smoke, according to Chicago police.

One of the men, 28, was trying to look at the next door patio rooftop when he slipped off a ledge and fell five stories, police said.

The Chicago Fire Department was called to extricate the man, who landed in a basement and was stuck between two walls, according to fire department spokesman Larry Merritt.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, he said. The other man, 25, was uninjured.
