WOODSTOCK, ILL. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- While Woodstock Willie has predicted six more weeks of winter, you'll be hard-pressed to find other local groundhogs offering forecasts today.
Lincoln Park Zoo and Brookfield Zoo haven't had groundhogs for years.
They do keep a groundhog at the Willowbrook Wildlife Center in Glen Ellyn but they refer to the marmot by its other name, woodchuck.
And they let him sleep on Groundhog Day.
Nate Hambel, a naturalist at the Willowbrook Wildlife Center, said the large rodents hibernate in the winter and waking them up disrupts the lower heart rate, metabolism and temperature, which could put their health at risk.
However, they do check on the groundhog during hibernation to make sure he's OK.
