CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A group of accused vehicle thieves tried to run over a police officer Tuesday in southwest suburban Palos Hills.

Officers responded to a vehicle theft in progress about 10 p.m. in the 7900 block of 111th Place and saw multiple males inside of the stolen vehicle nearby in the 11300 block of Moraine Drive, Palos Hills police said.

When an officer tried to stop them, the driver gunned the vehicle directly at the officer, who was grazed but uninjured, police said. The stolen vehicle then rammed into the officer’s squad car, and the officer was dragged along the side for a distance.

The stolen vehicle was able to escape the area at a high rate of speed, police said. Police departments from the surrounding suburbs were also unable to stop it.
