“We’re a collective, man. This is it. We’re all ripping this house apart. Right now it’s all cosmetic, so this house is completely sound for the bones; it’s just ugly. So we’re going through and beautifying the whole thing.”
Brigham started the collective five years ago after going through medical challenges with his children, who are now healthy.
"Yes, when your husband says he’s going to dress as Batman, you know, I kind of laughed at it but I also know his personality and I knew he wasn’t going to stop until it happened,” she said.
And this volunteer effort, renovating and donating a house, shows that it happened.
The home is being donated by the Cook County Land Bank Authority, an agency that acquires vacant homes and makes them available for productive use.
“Everyone loves Batman and everyone loves home giveaways for a good cause,” said the agency’s Executive Director, Robert Rose. “So it really fit in our wheelhouse to be able to do that as a foundation of what’s happening. As you can see it’s attracted everybody else to donate their time and energy to making this work and ultimately there’s a family that’s going to be in this house that’s going to be the beneficiary of all this goodwill.”
The non-profit Superhero Collective is working with area children’s hospitals to identify a family.
