'Nice Story About A Good Thing That An Officer Did': Supt. Brown Asks Media To Move Positive CPD Stories To Top Of News Coverage

Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown
City of Chicago

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The head of the Chicago Police Department said officers could use some good news, and is encouraging the media to share uplifting stories about his officers.

Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown acknowledged morale could be better when he made this pitch to members of the press: "a nice story, above the fold, in large print or at the beginning of your broadcast about a good thing that an officer did would go well in encouraging our officers.

"We figure out, again, how to do the job regardless of the media coverage, but every now and again if you could move up a great story of our officers doing something great in the community, like today, move that up to your top line rather than at the end of your coverage, it would be much appreciated, if you could do it. Just a good word into your producers," Brown said.

Supt. Brown, Community Policing Commander Angel Novalez, and 5th (Calumet) District Commander Glenn White joined city departments and residents to kick-off an Operation Clean event Friday in the Roseland neighborhood.

Operation Clean builds on Mayor Lightfoot's all-hands-on-deck, multi-department effort to protect and serve Chicago's residents and communities. In partnership with the Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS) and other city departments and agencies, Operation Clean will deliver comprehensive resources to a neighborhood in need of city services, including fixing broken streetlights, potholes and damaged buildings, removing unwanted graffiti, and cleaning empty lots.
