CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson will be hosting 20,000 police chiefs this weekend and next week at an international conference where President Trump will speak. Johnson won't attend that particular event.
President Trump is scheduled to speak to the International Association of Chiefs of Police on Monday. Chicago Police Spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Tuesday Johnson is boycotting the speech.
"He feels that the values of the people of Chicago are more important than what the president has to say.
"What he means by that is, we've been very clear on our position regarding how we treat individuals that live in the city. We don't care where you're from. We don't care how you got to Chicago. We safeguard everybody that lives here."
Guglielmi says another point of contention is the president's misrepresentation of the crime in Chicago.
He says the "data doesn't support the president's claims" that "Chicago is out of control and a shooting gallery."
Besides characterizing Chicago as unsafe, Trump has also slammed the city government for rejecting his immigration policies.
