CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Warm weather brought out about 5,000 people to the Special Olympics Polar Plunge in Lake Michigan Sunday morning.

It was 34 degrees in the water for the 20th annual fundraiser and the air temperature was even warmer.

The Shannon Rovers led the first group into the water, playing bagpipes as NBC's "Today" show weatherman Al Roker and 19th Ward Ald. Matt O'Shea took a dip.

Polly Elderinghoff decided to push through feeling under the weather so that she could plunge for her fifth time -- and say it was geat.

Organizers said they met their goal of raising over $2 million before the first plungers went in.
