CHICAGO (WBBM Newsradio) — Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot pushed back Friday at President Trump after he sent her and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker a letter filled with criticisms but offering to help solve the city’s gun-violence problems.
“I don’t need leadership lessons from Donald Trump,” Lightfoot tweeted in response.
Trump sent a letter to her and Pritzker, dated Friday, that railed about recent gun violence and in which the president offered to help, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
“Your lack of leadership on this important issue continues to fail the people you have sworn to protect,” Trump wrote. “I am concerned it is another example of your lack of commitment to the vulnerable citizens who are victims of this violence and a lack of respect for the men and women in law enforcement.”
“Same old tired playbook. How about some leadership not steeped in the divide and conquer tactics?” the mayor said.
There is no love lost, either, between Democrat Pritzker and Trump, a Republican, who have publicly traded jabs during the pandemic. Pritzker has faulted the White House for bungling the U.S. response to the novel coronavirus, which is surging in some states.
Illinois has trended away from an increase in cases and deaths related to COVID-19. On Friday, the state moved into Phase 4 of reopening.
On Friday, Illinois state health officials reported 857 new confirmed cases of coronavirus, including 39 deaths.
