CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- During his stop in Chicago Monday, President Trump turned to an old story about a mysterious police official and his claim that the city's crime problem could be solved overnight.
Chicago's top cop still isn't buying it.
It's a story the president has told before and centers around a conversation with an unnamed Chicago police official during a campaign stop in 2016.
"I said, 'You're a tough guy,'" Trump recalled, this time to the International Association of Chiefs of Police, which was meeting in Chicago. "`How long do you think it would take you to fix this killing problem in Chicago?'"
Trump claimed the Chicago police official told him: "One day, sir. These cops are great. They know all the bad guys, sir. They know exactly what to do. There's no leadership at the top of the police department."
The president said he later sent the officer's name to "somebody involved with Chicago."
"That's the last time I ever heard of that man. He probably got a good job some place," Trump said Monday.
A few hours later, Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson was asked about the story at police headquarters and chuckled.
"We spent a lot of time trying to identify this person," Johnson told reporters. "If there's somebody that can stop crime in a day, then I will bow down to them and say, 'Bring it on.' That's just not going to happen."
He also told reporters that at the time, no one with the department would admit to making the comment.
