CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- During his stop in Chicago on Monday, President Trump turned to an old story about a mysterious police official and his claim that the city's crime problem could be solved overnight, but Chicago's top cop still isn't buying it.

It's a story the President has told before and centers around a conversation with an unnamed Chicago Police official during a campaign stop in 2016.

"I said you're a tough guy. How long do you think it would take you to fix this killing problem in Chicago? He looked at me and said 'one day, sir. These cops know exactly what to do,'" President Trump said. "I asked him, what do you think the problem is? And he said there is no leadership from the Mayor and there's none at the top of the police department. They are afraid to do anything."

The President told the International Association of Chiefs of Police he later sent the officer's name to somebody involved with Chicago.

"That's the last time I ever heard of that man," Trump said.

Later in the day, Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson met with reporters and was asked to respond.

"If there's somebody who can stop crime in a day, then I will bow down to them and say bring it on," Johnson said. "But that's just not going to happen.

"Nobody - back then there was 12,00 of us - nobody will take claim that they said that to him," Johnson continued. He also chuckled at the story's premise.

"We are all adults here. If there were that person they would solve the crime in this country, not just in Chicago, so that person does not exist."
