CHICAGO (WBMM NEWSRADIO) -- September is Suicide Prevention Month and a veteran and military health care center in the northern suburbs is bringing attention to it with an infusion of fun.
The Captain James Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago is staging a "Be There Fair" to let veterans and military service members know they aren't alone and resources are available if they need assistance.
According to the center’s suicide prevention coordinator, Kristina Leece, more than 20 veterans a day commit suicide.
"It’s a fair to increase awareness about suicide but also increase some of the ways that people can learn to promote ways to feel better in crisis situations, coping skills," Leece said.
The fair will offer carnival-type games where, for instance, someone could spin a wheel and find out coping skills for being in a crisis situation, Leece explained.
The "Be There Fair" runs from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. today at the Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago.
