VIDEO: Officer Drags Woman Suspected Of Looting Out Of Car, Kneels On Her Neck Outside Brickyard Mall

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating an allegation of abuse by Chicago police on Sunday night in the parking lot of the Brickyard Mall on the Northwest Side.

Video shows Chicago police surrounding Tnika Tate's car and using a baton to break windows. Police were apparently concerned about possible looting and contend Tate's 25-year-old cousin Mia Wright had been seen with three or more people, who were out to cause violence. But, Tate told CBS 2 neither of them had been out of the car.

“They just start bamming and hitting at my car, then they bust out three windows,” Tnika Tate said. “I feared for my life...They approached my car so forcefully where they just started bamming and hitting at my car, then they bust out three windows of mine, and then they actually tore off my door handle – the passenger side door handle – and they literally drug my little cousin Mia out to the ground."

But what bothers Tate and Wright more than anything is when Wright was yanked from the car. The family said one officer held her down by putting his knee on her back and neck.

“I felt like an animal,” Wright said. “They pulled me by my hair, dragged me out the vehicle, had my face down on the concrete. The officer had his knee in my neck. I just felt like an animal. I felt like I wasn’t nothing, like I was not even a human being at that moment.”

Wright was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct. 

Mayor Lightfoot said she has even seen the video, and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating to get a full picture of what happened.

The Chicago Police Department released a statement following the incident.

"The Chicago Police Department strives to treat all individuals our officers encounter with respect. Anyone who feels they have been mistreated by a CPD officer is encouraged to call 311 and file a complaint with the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, who will investigate allegations of misconduct. Misconduct on the part of our officers will not be tolerated," the statement said.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) also released a statement.

"COPA received a complaint regarding this incident and has opened an investigation to determine the if the actions of involved officers are within Department policy. We encourage anyone with information to contact our office at 312-746-3609 or visit our website at ChicagoCOPA.org."
